Month 1 · Stage 1

Laying the First Stone

Entered Apprentice · Purgation · Orientation

This month is for orientation, not memorisation. Read through the EA Opening and Closing ceremonies once or twice. Identify the Inner Guard's lines — these will be your first memorisation target next month. Begin building your first memory palace. Choose a familiar location — your home, your route to work, or the lodge room itself. Walk through it mentally and identify 10–15 distinct 'stations.' You will use these stations to anchor ritual text in the months ahead.

Contemplation Prompts

  • The Hidden Curriculum warns against 'spiritual consumerism' — the habit of collecting systems, books, and teachers without depth. Reflect honestly: where have you done this before? What drew you to accumulate rather than practise?
  • The book argues that Ward's cross-cultural method validates Masonic forms by showing they appear in every civilisation. Before reading Ward, consider: why would the same symbols appear independently across cultures separated by oceans and centuries?
  • The four-stage model maps onto the Christian mystical tradition (purgation, illumination, union) and the Masonic degrees (EA, FC, MM/RA). Before studying the details, sit with the word 'purgation.' What needs to be purged before genuine spiritual work can begin?
